We all know that the economy is not now, and won't be again, what it used to be. Sales are harder to get, and new customers harder to acquire.

Many businesses in this climate are saving money by making a mistake. That mistake is reducing marketing, advertising and sales expenses to save money.

This poor economy and business climate are, possibly, a great time to expand marketing of your business. Why? Because there are fewer businesses competing in marketing than there were, so your message will be more likely to be heard.

But – you don't need to spend a lot of money on advertising and marketing to attract just new customers. It costs several times more to attract and acquire a new customer than it does to re-attract an existing or former customer by marketing to them. They already know you and, if their previous experience with you and your product or services was positive and successful, then they are already inclined to listen to your message.

You can grow your business before spending advertising money. There are many ways to market to your existing and former customer base, without spending money. So, in this time of pulling back on marketing and expenses, you can actually get ahead by marketing without money.

How do you do that? Here are a few ideas:

Send a letter or email message to your customers offering them some kind of benefit to doing business with you. This doesn't need to be a sales letter with a product or service attached, but a reminder that you have great products or services that they have used in the past and that you'd like an opportunity to grow or reestablish your relationship with them.

Whatever your Unique Selling Proposition (or Extra Value Proposition) is – remind them of it and that they will benefit from doing business with you because of that USP or EVP. Your USP or EVP is the thing that makes your business unique. For instance, if you are a fabricator, and your expertise is quick turnaround on jobs and extreme customer service, then that is your USP or EVP. That is what makes doing business with you more attractive than what your competitors offer.

Then, along with the letter, offer them a valuable gift of some kind, as a thank you for their business. This can be a report, or a related product, or even a recommendation of the service of a related but non-competitive other business. If the latter, you further cement the value of doing business with you, because you are sharing other opportunities that may be helpful to your customer.

The bottom line is that if you make your business uniquely attractive to your customers and former customers, you may well win more of their business, and therefore more sales and profits – before resorting to advertising and other expensive means of attracting new customers..

Great article, Bill.

One of the things our marketing guy is constantly amazed at is how often he calls on a long-time existing customer and has them ask if we offer a service we have been advertising for years. You have to keep contacting them regularly and reminding them of the services you offer.
